1. The reason it is important to identify a plant/root correctly is because if you do not there is a slight chance that you end up ingesting a poisonous plant instead, or at the very least you will ned up ingesting a plant that won't heal your injury.
2. In case you are ever lost/stranded in a foreign area, it is very important to know a variety of plants from other regions so you're not clueless in case you are injured while you are lost. If you only know flora from your region then you will only be fit to heal yourself if you're lost in that region.
3.Yes, it would make a significant difference depending on the time of year that you are travelling because certain plants only bloom after certain times of the year, so it is important that we know all sorts of plantlife from other regions that bloom in different seasons.
4. Yes, it would be quite important to develop a relationship with locals in order to learn about the local plant life because chances are you are unfamiliar with the local flora, and the locals would be your best chance at learning about it.
5. If I was found without traditional medicine i would trust my references on the local flora because for hundreds of years people survived illness by using plants as medicine, and if it worked then, it works now.
